Connection to Harringay Warehouse District

A proposal of useful space for the community. The proposal is confirmation of the current community use. The language is of a workshop / warehouse / gallery with sufficient internal height to stage exhibitions and staged events / activities that require good natural lighting. The formal urban nature of the proposal is a reflection of an industrial typology that is prevalent in the area.

Proposal Outline

The drawings describe an approach to the site that is more of a building than an open pavilion and our proposal is aimed squarely at being a practical and secure resource for the HWD. Three simple timber framed and clad units to provide useful multi-purpose interior space. It is assumed that as much timber of varying sections, species and age as possible could be sourced in the HWD. The saw tooth roof is orientated to catch north light and a filtered opening on the south elevation admits sunlight into the main hall space. We have shown provision for a stage which could be de-mountable. The ancillary spaces are entirely flexible and would be subject to brief development. Elements of the units could be constructed offsite at various locations (in the HWD) and brought to site for assembly. Attention would be paid to internal surfaces to reduce reverberation times to render the building acoustically usable to large groups and music performance. The building /pavilion would be un-heated. The slatted opening on the street elevation would provide security and filtered light to the main hall interior. The objective would be to render the existing ground surface as safe and usable without investing in a costly new floor build up. As a figure ground diagram the plan of the proposal takes the line of the WNW boundary to generate an orthogonal geometry over the site in the interest of straightforward construction.
