In August we continued the local listening phase, speaking to more residents at our meet up and via a WhatsApp group. It’s really interesting see ideas being generated across the Waterhouse district and people interested in making use of an organised outdoor space. We also had the opportunity to spend more time working with the winning architects Nine due to our first formal pot of funding being confirmed with Haringey Council.
Architects Meet Up
Will, Hamish & Barney, who created the winning concept, had two site visits – first onsite armed with measuring tapes and sketch pads. The second was to meet residents from the Harringay Warehouse District. At the warehouse meet up it was fascinating to see a meeting of minds – Nine were keen to understand in more detail how residents used the warehouse district and residents keen to discuss how certain features and functions could be incorporated. It was a session full of intrigue on both sides – a very collaborative session that sparked lots of ideas there and then, and afterward as the conversations continued in our warehouse WhatsApp group. Nine are going to be involved in a few more up coming sessions, collaborating with working groups of local residents from the warehouse district and nearby streets.
Boano Prismontas
During June, when we shared a series of podcast about our process to date, we had the pleasure of talking to Tomaso & Jonas from the London based architectural and creative company Boano Prismontas. The studio adopts a creative and hands-on approach as a strategic tool to propose design solutions to the contemporary world. It was inspiring to see and hear more about various project, each drawing inspiration from, and combining, various aspects of, art, architecture, and technology. We’re keen to keep the dialogue open, as the expertise and insight they can bring to achieving a project like Tottenham Pavilion is invaluable. Be sure to check out their website and have a listen again to the podcast – thanks to Koo/ZArch for the introduction!
Tottenham Creative Enterprise Zone
Last year, South Tottenham was selected by the Mayor of London to become one of six London areas to be designated a Creative Enterprise Zone (CEZ). This will play a key role in how Haringey supports and develops creative and cultural businesses – through some additional funding and policy priorities. We have been involved in the steering group to help shape how organisations, professionals and residents benefit from the new status. We were really pleased when Tottenham CEZ were able to confirm our first formal funding to allow us to continue the co-design workshops to shape the project proposal. Check the link below for info on more of these workshops happening in September.
Refreshed Sign
The Tottenham Pavilion sign, originally created for the pilot we ran last year, was looking a little weathered. Thanks to Jenna Jardine, from Harringay Warehouse District, for giving it a facelift and the team for cutting back the overgrowth.
Chatter on WhatsApp Group
Over the summer we started a WhatsApp group for warehouse residents to share ideas, thoughts and observations relating to the Tottenham Pavilion project. It’s been great to see ideas start to develop and, more importantly, to see how group members are actively connecting with each other. People are asking questions that other members are solving – this type of self-supporting community is at the heart of the Pavilion project and something we’re really keen to see develop further.
Other Connections
A project like this evolves over time and it’s always great when other people get in contact. Here are the other connections, old and new, we made over the summer:
- New connection with Ed Quigley, who runs an Art Market at Blue House Yard, Wood Green.
- Reconnected with David ‘Bennie’, Vartry Road Residents Group.
- Brought Simon Donovan, Manor House Development Trust, up to speed on new developments. We’ve previously partnered with Simon on various projects in the past making better links between the warehouse district and Redmond Community Centre in Woodberry Down Estate.
As always, we’re very open to talking to anyone – whether you’re curious or concerned, drop us a message.
