As with many projects in Harringay Warehouse District (HWD) there’s a divergence in opinions. This ‘clash of differences’ often typifies Warehouse Life and is a central theme we wanted to explore in this project.
To capture the journey, from conception to the completion of the competition, we are documenting different narratives and this call out is about capturing the hyper local voices of HWD. We know, for some, the thought of “outsiders” invading the warehouse territory is unthinkable, whereas others feel the community is ready to connect with international creatives. We hear praise that the Pavilion will create much needed space for tenants to host events, exhibitions and gatherings, while others think the area shouldn’t be bringing attention to itself.
There’s differing thoughts from those who have been here for years to those who are new, from lease holders to tenants, from creatives with something to sell to people who seek an off grid existence. People arrive from different paths – some warehouse dwellers called the area home long before HWD, some have come from afar, others are passing through. Each instance, each situation, each variety has its own story, set of beliefs and impressions. Some are shared, some are pioneered, some emerge, evolve and expire overtime.
No matter how passionate one might be, nothing is ever black and white. That’s at the heart of what we think gives HWD an alternative voice to ‘traditional gentrification’ – where ideas are often softened so much not to offend, the end result lacks any real bite or reflection of real life. Of course, naturally, we know others will disagree.
(We’re going to publish other call outs for different communities later in the week).
Be heard. Share your perspective.
We’re asking current HWD tenants to send in a short audio statement of how they view this Pavilion project. We want to capture aspirations and reservations, hopes and fears, likes and dislikes. A cross section of recordings will be used in a podcast series we’re publishing in June.
Upload an audio recording by 15 May, stating your name, how long you’ve lived in a warehouse and your thoughts on the project:
(alternately ping the recording and your details over by email firstname.lastname@example.org)
