Connection to Harringay Warehouse District

The proposal is a lightweight structure which has a prominent address to the urban junction immediately south and to the warehouse district immediately north. We call it a village stage. The design proposes a celebratory and colourful stage set that intensifies the architectural characteristics of the neighbouring warehouses into the design for a pavilion. They are big volumetric structures with expressive assemblies of simple materials and lightweight cladding.

Proposal Outline

The stage will be room-like and able to accommodate a variety of uses like the lofty sheds which surround the site. We see a mixture of performances, fairs, exercise classes and parties taking place on this large table; the broad program attracting a wide range of people from the surrounding neighbourhoods. The site becomes like a village green.The stage and a small entrance porch contain and bring focus to the space around the site, enabling it to be used as a venue. Pockets of space around the stage are inhabited with stools and tables orientated towards the pavilion.
The stage is large enough to hold a full ensemble of musicians, dance troope, or large yoga class. The fabric provides shelter from light rain and shade from midday sun.
We stain the timber scaffold planks on the stage floor to bring focus to this within the site. The pattern abstracts the woven pattern of the fabric sheets above.

Construction concept
The design of the village stage intensifies the architectural characteristics of the neighbouring warehouses into the design for a pavilion. They are big volumetric structures with expressive assemblies of simple materials and lightweight cladding.
Our pavilion uses scaffold poles to create a large metal frame which sits on concrete feet and is clad with fabric. The stage is constructed by laying timber scaffold boards across scaffold joists.Fabric tightly clads the structure creating silhouettes and dappled shadows on the stage. As the breeze blows the fabric lightly ruffles and the shadows dance around.We stain the timber scaffold planks on the stage floor to bring focus to this within the site. The pattern abstracts the woven pattern of the fabric sheets above. At night time large portable lights will illuminate the volume like a Japanese paper lantern.
