First things first, our aspirations are that this project is open for anyone and everyone. We hope, if we get the money to build it, that the space will be a new meeting point for all communities, a hyper local audience mixing with people who are intrigued by the approach who will come and enjoy the talents of local artists, artisan products and wider activity.

We called it Tottenham Pavilion because of the postcode – N15 is South Tottenham. We could have gone for Harringay Pavilion (as the other half of the warehouse district is N4) or a different name altogether. If built, we might switch the name to the designer’s title. Nothing is set in stone.

Voting

There are two stages to the votes happening. The first is the community vote – a chance for people who will live / work within c.1mile radius of the Pavilion to share their gut instincts, voice their likes / dislikes. The second, is a formal judging panel made up of three architects (who bring lots of skills to assess the viability of a structure / concept) and four advocates from the different parts of the more local community. Why Online?

The original plan was for a physical exhibition of all designs. We wanted people to come, talk, share, connect and vote. Covid-19 happened and we had to think of another solution. It was a mammoth task to get everything online – the system is working, it could be better, but we only had limited time and resources (everyone is volunteering on this project).

Who Votes?

We had a lot of discussion on this topic. We wanted it to be fair and manageable (we’re all volunteers). As the immediate area of the Pavilion cuts across three postcodes (N4, N15 & N16), we decided that the best approach was to open the vote to anyone living or working within c.1 mile of the Pavilion site. The easiest way to explain this was through focusing on the immediate postcodes – although we limited N16 to Amhurst Park / Stamford Hill as the whole of the territory went too far.

Everyone in N17, we haven’t included you in the community vote as you’re further away. We will certainly include you in all the other activity from opportunities to help build, to attend and even host events.

What Happens Next?

The winner gets selected, that’s obvious. Then in June, the project is part of the London Festival of Architecture which is now a digital event. We’re going to be exploring different aspects of the competition online during the festival (more on that later). After the summer we have the massive task of fundraising – to raise enough money for the design to be built in 2021. So watch this space.
