Connection to Harringay Warehouse District
Our idea is simple. Colour, form and symbols are carefully interwoven within the site aesthetics.
We do not see merit in creating a pavilion that can be ‘transported merely anywhere’.
We feel LOCTAION and SITE IDENTITY should inform any proposal resulting in an offering…
unique to Haringay Warehouse District (H.W.D), unique to Tottenham and unique to the community it serves.
A series of installations celebrate site location and importantly, the ethos and identity of Haringay Warehouse District businesses’ and residents. The pavilion – a hub to showcase HWD mantra, skillset and act as a beacon/ gateway to the wider estate.
Proposal Outline
Opportunity_
The Tottenham Pavilion competition provides a unique opportunity to showcase the ethos of the HARINGAY WAREHOUSE DISTRICT, welcoming visitors to engage with the community and act as a gateway to the ‘wider estate’.
Background_
BRASS ARCHITECTURE understand the dynamics, opportunities and constraints of such a community set up at Haringay Warehouses – as members of our team have lived in like-for-like units located in Hackney, East London (believed to be the same landlord).
We are Fully Aware that:
Community means Community …
Co-operation is Embraced not Feared …
Cross Pollination of Ideas, Skills & Thoughts breed Respect, Happiness, Excitement, Creativity…
Design_
Flexibility, Symbolism and Fun are the basis of our proposal. We propose an explosion of colour across the site.
On approach a visitor is greeted by a Kaleidoscope of forms, colours and activity; a large flag to the rear of the site denotes
location… the site boundary is washed with the colours of the RAINBOW … a large colourful stretch tent shelters primary site activities… stalls and activity zones litter the site.
To summarise, our design is a series of installations sat side by side on the site.
A stretch canopy ‘pavilion’ is the heart of the design (an area for performance, discussion, activity).
Accent bespoke furniture, stalls and artwork (created by the HWD community) are showcased.
From our own experiences (married with observations undertaken at the HWD site visit) we feel the Pavilion should encompass the spirit of the community – whilst affording enough flexibility for group members to ‘take ownership’ and adapt the space to suit their needs.
Symbolism/ Site identity_
Insignia of Haringey’s Coat of Arms is integrated to proposed site entrance canopy (arrival location), to the cloak of the main pavilion canopy and to the ‘activity stage’. Black and Gold (Haringey Borough Colours) sit side by side with the colours of the RAINBOW. The RAINBOW., the ultimate symbol of tolerance, respect and solidarity – commonly utilised by the LGBTQ+ community, creatives globally and spiritualists.
Idea_
A simple marriage of geographic identity (historic and present tense) plus community symbolism underpins the design …
but to any passer by … one is immediately taken by the sensory overload of sound, colour, form and activity …
inviting interest, intrigue and engagement.
Mantra_
”A carnival of colour holding its arms out to the community”.
